The 2018-2019 Team at GatorMUN XVI

How We Began

Tampa Bay Homeschool Model United Nations was founded in 2016 as a small team of six highschoolers and one coach. In our first year of competition, we traveled to three conferences across the state.

We have since expanded our staff with two assistant coaches, and served dozens of students throughout the Tampa Bay region, and look forward to continuing this tradition!

2016-17 Travel Team

In our inaugural year, we had 6 delegates take to the circuit in order to make our presence known on the Model UN conference scene. We first competed at KnightMUN XVI, representing Ukraine. Next, the team traveled to GatorMUN XV where they represented Italy. Finally, the year was completed at FHSMUN 39 where, again representing Italy, one delegate won Best Delegate and the team as a whole was recognized with an Outstanding Delegation award for their representation of that country.

2017-18 Travel Team

The second year of TBHMUN started with 10 delegates competing at the same three conferences across the state. We started the year at KnightMUN XVII, representing Russia. The delegates took home four Verbal Commendation awards for their performance. Next, we traveled to GatorMUN XVI, representing the United Kingdom, where one delegate won an Outstanding Delegate award. Finally, we ended the year at FHSMUN, where we represented both Sweden and Poland. The delegates representing Sweden were recognized with an Honorable Delegation award for their representation of that country.

2018-19 Travel Team

This year, the team had three returning delegates and several new and inexperienced delegates. The team showed a strong start at KnightMUN XVII that year, representing the People’s Republic of China, and winning two Outstanding Delegate and two position paper awards. Next, the team traveled to GatorMUN XVI representing the Netherlands and brought home two Honorable Delegate awards, and one position paper award. Finally, the team visited FHSMUN 40, representing France. Although no awards were won there, the team still performed admirably to the great pride of their coach and parents!

2019-20 Travel Team

A new year came with many new faces and new staff members. With a total of five delegates, but three of them being fresh-faced freshmen, Matthew brought on two alumni, Rachel and Justin, as assistant coaches to help guide the new team. The team attended KnightMUN XVIII, representing North Korea, where two delegates were awarded Best Position Paper awards. Next, we competed at GatorMUN XVII representing Norway, where our delegates were awarded one Honorable Delegate award, one Best Position Paper award, and one Verbal Commendation award. Finally, at FHSMUN 41, we represented Belgium. One member of the team was awarded Best Delegate and the team was awarded an Honorable Delegation Award for their performance at FHSMUN.

2020

Days after the conclusion of FHSMUN 41, the world shut down due to COVID-19. Our staff scrambled to find new ways to safely adapt our crisis committees to COVID-19 safety guidelines, and travel team meetings, as well. We transitioned our meetings from in-person to completely online Zoom calls and Google Classroom learning materials. Conference cancellations brought a quick halt to the travel team season.

2021-22 Travel Team

With a return to relative normalcy, our team returned as well. We welcomed back three past delegates from the 2019-20 season and three new students. We started the year at GatorMUN XIX where we represented Indonesia. Two delegates were recognized with Best Position Paper awards in their committees. We concluded the year at FHSMUN 43, where we represented China. Though we did not win any awards at that conference, we were proud of our delegate’s hard work in overcoming the challenges of COVID-19 to compete so well throughout the year.

2023-24 Travel Team

A new era began in 2023 with the relaunch of the high school travel team. We welcomed back one returning delegate and seven new students. The year began at KnightMUN where we represented a variety of countries on several committees. We continued at GatorMUN where we represented the United Arab Emirates. One delegate was recognized with an Honorable Delegate Award for their performance. We concluded the year at FHSMUN 45, where we represented Switzerland and Albania.

Our Mission

Tampa Bay Homeschool Model United Nations was founded in order to give homeschool students throughout the Tampa Bay area the opportunity to participate in the Model United Nations circuit which would otherwise be closed to them as homeschoolers.

We strive to develop not only the skills necessary to succeed on the circuit, but also tools to help our students in the real world: public speaking, networking, research, writing, negotiation, and teamwork.

Our goal is to help produce well-rounded citizens who will make a positive impact on the world around them.
